My Favourite Web3 Sports Talk of 2024 - Chiliz @ Token2049

My favourite Web3 Sports talk of 2024 was a panel involving Alexandre Dreyfus (founder and CEO) of Chiliz at Token2049. Alexandre was joined by James Walton (Deloitte’s Sports Business team), Fabio Cannavaro (Ambassador and Former Lega Serie A player) and Michele Ciccarese (Marketing and Commercial Director of Lega Serie A).

Game Scored Balls

The key innovation highlighted in the talk was ‘Game Scored Balls’, where Chiliz became the first sponsor to stop a live Lega Serie A game. After a goal is scored, the balls are either placed into a Socio’s branded bag, or collectors box with “Own History” printed on the box.

Viewers watching the game are then invited to scan the QR code and interact with the Socio’s platform, enabling them to bid in the auction to own the ball. In the 2023/24 season, 188 balls were redeemed in 44 matches, by fans in 22 different countries. Napoli’s Scudetto winning goal was sent to a fan in Japan. In the 2024/25 season, there will be balls from 100 matches, so more fans can own these digital sports assets.

The importance to Lega Serie A

This innovation is beneficial for Lega Serie A for two reasons. The first, being that it engages a foreign audience, with most fans of Lega Serie A not attending the match in person nor being in Italy. The second, being that Lega Serie A needs to use innovative technologies to be able to compete with the rest of European football’s big five football leagues (England, France, Germany and Spain). The main competitive edge in modern football is money and Lega Serie A can maximise the potential of their Sports Memorabilia revenue using innovation. The Sports Memorabilia has a $35bn worldwide market and is expected to reach more than $100bn in the next seven years. The goal scored balls are then NFC chipped to generate a NFT, so fans have digital ownership. This proves authenticity and reduces the threat of fake merchandise and scams. The cryptographic security is also key to onboard new users to Web3 and Cryptocurrencies, to build both fan trust and engagement.

Lega Serie A also show best practices for other rights holders, by using verifiable video cameras and angles not shown to TV viewers.

Many thanks,
